Bordeaux 2019 – I think this was the most interesting Bordeaux en primeur campaign for a number of years. The yields were a bit lower and the prices lower than previous years on the whole.
In my opinion, the world difficulties caused by COVID-19 have been factored in and if you are lucky enough to have some spare cash, there is some good value and quality to be had. Perhaps not as good as the best recent vintages e.g. 2009,2010,2015,2016 but a very good showing.
This is in my mind a drinkers vintage… although the prices are keen (around a 30% discount) compared to more recent vintages suggesting investment upside, the quality is not on a par with some of the top vintages in the past decade so the maximum price is likely going to be less than an equivalently scored “top” vintage equivalent wine. So relatively good value if you plan to drink the wine but perhaps less so if you plan to sell.
Finally a general word of caution on the risk of trading wine. Wine is a somewhat illiquid (pardon the pun) commodity in that there are not generally as many buyers/sellers as you might have for say a publically listed stock or share. Thus the spread of bid-offer prices can be high and there are a lot of scammers/ issues with fraud that will catch out even some professionals in the trade. Unless you know what you are doing and have spent time learning about wine and wine trading stay well clear.
