Social media is a great way to build an audience of people interested in your product and company. But how do you build an audience from scratch? How do you get lots of likes/follows? I’m going to skirt the issue of why you want likes/follows and what you plan to do with them – that is probably another post. Also, generally you have to say something of value to your target audience (know your target customer/listener/avatar), again I’ll leave that for a future post. The basic question is how can I get some followers/likes? Why is this important if you are at zero followers/likes?

Another great way to get high-value followers/likes is to “wear your business on your sleeve”. I’m not suggesting tattoos here but putting the links to your Facebook / Twitter pages in your e-mail signature. Unless you are broadcast spamming people with email (not recommended), these emails will be going to people who know you or of you. There is a good chance that they might check out your Facebook /Twitter pages and subscribe to them out of curiosity – again followers for free (or rather social capital).
