The Cambridge Computer Lab has an alumni network called the Lab Ring and each year they invite a guest speaker to their annual dinner. I had the fortune to sit opposite Mike Muller the CTO of ARM. ARM is a big success story here… a Cambridge startup that has gone all the way to being a huge global success and has had to deal with the growing pains along the way.
My notes from the talk:
Engineers need to meet customers
Robin Saxby (CEO) did a market SWOT analysis
Push talented people into challenging areas e.g. Engineers as marketers
People matter but there comes a time you have to let them go – but keep in touch
Size does matter – may need to read books about orgs – may need to do things differently
Recognize when you need another department or buy SAP before you fail
Acquisitions: Culture really matters – impose it – there may be casualties world culture is difficult
